My first memory of taking pictures was when I was 13. I stole my brother’s Nikon FM 35 and documented an afternoon of skateboarding with my friends. I never actually returned the camera; in fact, I keep it as a reminder of that initial excitement of un-self-conscious photography. I felt then, as I do now, two decades later, a sense of empowerment in the idea of my camera as a kind of passport into other worlds. Somebody once described my work as “Images that are edgy but moments that are soft.” I believe my strength as a photographer is in my disarming nature that enables me to capture the essential pith of a subject in an “off-moment.”
